Spartak Woodlands and Bedminster spring cup shocks

TWO second division sides overcame Division One opposition in the first round of the Bristol Churches League Cup.

Ben Doherty gave Cairns Road Corinthian­s a half-time lead against Spartak Woodlands at Little Stoke Park, but the Division Two side hit back with an equaliser from Allan Macleod and won the penalty shootout 4-1.

On the 4G pitch at South Bristol Sports Centre, Bedminster Church of Christ edged out Bath Churches United 5-4, with goals from Jason Shamis (2), Jordan Stephens (2) and Anthony Russe. Bath replied through Rob Rust (2), Joe Little and Toby Lansdell.

Edge Church narrowly avoided the same fate as Cairns Road and Bath Churches as they overcame Division Two side Castle Green Reserves 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Theo Allen scofred for Edge, while Jason Bates was on target for Green.

Castle Green’s first team were also knocked out by a 5-2 reverse to Woodlands United on the Patchway Commuinity College 3G. Alagie Keiti (3), Oliver Reed and Tom Williamson fired United to victory, while Michael Alvis struck twice for the visitors.

Clevedon Family Church overcame their reserves 5-0 at Clevedon School, thanks to a hat-trick from Nathan Douglas and strikes from Cam Harding and Will Price. VCF Santos had goals from Joshua Allen, Martin Frill, Jack Nicholls and Jowan Nicholls in a 4-1 win at Rock Crusaders whose goal came from Oliver Morris.

In an all-Division Two clash, Nailsea Churches won 4-2 at home to St James Revolution , via goals from Mitchell Player (2), David Warnes and James Brinson. Michael Bojski and Hugo Daw replied.

Woodlands Academy progressed to the next round with a 10-3 home win agaiinst fellow Division Two side Edge Church A . Barnaby Moore led the way with four goals, with the other ones from Hanad Habil, Mahad Hashi, Samuel O’Keefe, Isaac Waller, Jamal Hussein and Ubaka Onyekwelu. Kane Alexander (2) and Filip Purski scored for Edge.
