Women’s football Maddie grabs an equaliser to earn a point for Almondsbur­y

ALMONDSBUR­Y had to settle for a point from an eventful 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Ladies Developmen­t in the Northern Division of the South West Women’s League.

Maddie Wood equalised an early strike from Cheltenham after the Almondsbur­y defence was caught square. Wood broke through and poked the ball away from the goalkeeper before ramming it home.

The second half was goalless but not uneventful. In one attack, Almondsbur­y had three shots on goal from close range, with one of

them cleared off the line by a defender and another hitting the woodwork. Tash, Terri and Maddie were the Almondsbur­y players who went close to scoring.

Amy Jeffries manufactur­ed room for herself before being denied by a resolute Cheltenham defence.

Wood thought she’d won it for the visitors, but the goal was was ruled out for handball.

Almondsbur­y also thought they should have been awarded a penalty for handball but the referee turned down the appeal.

Sarah Doige, a recent signing

from Swindon, was voted player of the match for a calm performanc­e from full-back.

Whitchurch Ladies came away from Winchcombe with all three points after a 2-1 win.

At 2-0 Whitchurch were on top but couldn’t find a third and conceded with eight minutes to go, causing a tense end to the game, but the goalkeeper and defence dealt with all that came at them.

Frankie Berrymore scored the first from a tight angle, with Jess Nicholls adding the second with a volley from the edge of the box.
