Churches Clevedon and Woodies setting hot pace in Division One

CLEVEDON Family Church and Woodlands look set to battle it out for the Churches League title - as was the case last season before it was curtailed early by the coronaviru­s pandemic.

Both sides had comfortabl­e wins at the weekend as Clevedon ran out 7-1 victors at Edge Church, while Woodies were 7-0 winners at Bath Churches United.

Will Price (4), Nathan Douglas (2) and Lewis Mundy scored for

Clevedon at Little Stoke Park, with Filip Purski on target for Edge.

Woodies, who scored four times in the last 20 minutes against Bath, had goals from Andy Baynton (2), Jack Brady (2), Oli Porter (2) and Alex Bakker.

Clevedon and Woodies have both won four games out of four this season, with Clevedon sitting top of the table on goal difference.

Woodlands United gained a second win of the season with a 2-1 success against Thornbury Baptist at Alveston, thanks to goals from Sam Cook and Alagie Kieti. Nic Lockett-Chapman scored for Thornbury. Cairns Road Corinthian­s took their first point of the campaign from a 3-3 home draw against VCF Santos. Chris Spurrey (2) and Ricky Bush scored for Corinthian­s, while Joshua Allen hit a hat-trick for Santos.

It’s tight at the top of Division Two with the first four teams all on nine points. Leaders Spartak Woodlands did not play last weekend, while second-placed St James Revolution lost 3-1 at home to Nailsea Churches, who have moved up to third. Mitchell Player scored a hat-trick for Nailsea.

Rock Crusaders are in fourth spot following a 3-2 reverse at Castle Green Reserves, who were indebted to strikes from Callum Evans, Ryan Peacock and Ben Tucker. Rock’s goals were scored by Justin Watts and Kacy Brown.

Bedminster Church of Christ had two goals from Rupert Mall and one from Connor Flicker in a 3-2 home win against Woodlands Academy, who responded through Tom Cleave and Barnaby Moore.

Dominic Dawes and Tate Shaw were among the scorers as Edge Church A won 3-2 at ECF Portishead, whose two goals were scored by Matthew Carpenter.
