Crowds seen ‘shouting and cheering’ on harbourside after 10pm curfew
A LARGE crowd was captured on camera partying outside Bristol city centre bars after closing time.
The video, taken on Friday, showed a crowd of people on the street on Bristol Harbourside close to V Shed Wetherspoons, Pitcher and Piano and Za Za Bazaar.
Shouts and cheers can be heard, with one reveller seen getting onto another’s shoulders.
The crowd of people seemingly congregated after the coronavirus curfew, which means all pubs and restaurants have to close at 10pm.
The curfew is designed to stop the spread of coronavirus and to prohibit large crowds from multiple households mixing.
Earlier this month mayor Marvin Rees called on the Government to scrap the 10pm curfew, saying it is helping to spread coronavirus and causing brawls on the streets.
Speaking during a Facebook Live on October 7, Mr Rees said the situation was similar to how it was years ago before the licensing laws were relaxed when last orders were 11pm and everyone was chucked out of venues at the same time.
He said: “We have raised concerns and written to government today about the impact of the 10pm curfew.
“We are saying to government we appreciate what they’re trying to do to stem the spread of Covid but there are a number of concerns.
“Chief among them, as raised by our director of public health, is our night-time venues have been made Covid secure.”
When contacted by the Post, a spokesman for Wetherspoon pubs declined to comment.
