Spooky goings- on

WE TAKE A LOOK AT BRISTOL’S TOP PARANORMAL HOTSPOTS

- Robin MURRAY robin.murray@reachplc.com

BRISTOL has long been known for its links to ghostly goings-on and paranormal activity.

Very few places in England are home to as many spooky myths, legends and stories than right here in Bristol.

But although there are dozens of places known for their eerie nature in Bristol, only two have made a recent list of the 100 most haunted locations in the UK.

The Llandoger Trow and ss Great Britain have both climbed a number of places on this year’s list, which takes into account the number of reports of paranormal activity, unique ghosts count and longevity of the haunting

Compiled by paranormal news website Higgypop.com, the list includes pubs, castles, prisons and forests from across the UK.

Top of the list is The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton under Edge, which has been investigated by many paranormal researchers including the television shows Ghost Adventures and Most Haunted.

These are the two Bristol locations which made the top 100.

The Llandoger Trow: No 55

The Llandoger Trow has been closed since early 2019, but plans to take it on and reopen it were unveiled earlier this year.

Even after its closure, the historic King Street boozer is recognised as one of the most haunted places in Bristol, and in the entire UK in Higgypop’s round-up.

There have been numerous ghost sightings and strange goings-on over the years at the 17th-century alehouse, where Robert Louis Stevenson reportedly wrote Treasure Island.

The most famous ghost sighting is that of a little boy, who some say was murdered at the inn. His footsteps have reportedly been heard by guests staying at the pub.

Higgypop said: “The Llandoger Trow is without a doubt the most haunted location in Bristol, boasting 15 ghosts, most famously the ghost of a young boy.”

The pub comes in at number 55 on Higgypop’s list, climbing seven places from 2019.

SS Great Britain: No 18

One of Bristol’s most iconic landmarks, some say the long history of the SS Great Britain – which has seen some tragic events – means it is an incredibly haunted ship.

People who step foot aboard the famous vessel have reported hearing heavy footsteps walking along the deck, as well as the sound of doors opening and even music playing, despite nobody else being aboard.

It is also said a young bride died on board just weeks after getting married and a young sailor fell from the rigging to his death.

According to Higgypop: “The SS Great Britain’s most retold haunting is that of Captain John Gray, who vanished one night after falling ill during a voyage.

“He was never to be seen again. Some say it was suicide, while others claim he was murdered for all the gold stowed away in his cabin.”

The historic SS Great Britain, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, comes in at number 18 on the list, up 13 places from last year.
