Hangar District Fresh look at new Filton community

- Sophie GRUBB sophie.grubb@reachplc.com

MORE details have been revealed about a huge new community billed as a “playground for Bristol’s next generation”.

The sprawling Brabazon neighbourhood is under construction at Filton Airfield, and will eventually have 2,675 homes, 62 acres of employment space, three new schools, a public park, health centre and retail and leisure facilities.

Developers emailed out an update to prospective residents yesterday, with an update about the 302 homes which should be first to be completed next year.

A brochure circulated to potential buyers announced the homes will be collectively known as the Hangar District, featuring a range of one and twobedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom homes.

The brochure, released by developer YTL, read: “Built of solid red brick and designed by award-winning architects, the houses are proper homes: spacious, warm and welcoming.

“Set among peaceful, tree-lined streets across a south-facing hillside, the Hangar District will be a haven at the heart of Brabazon.

“With the historic aircraft hangar 16U reborn as a local, social hub, and with its cafe spilling out onto the green space, picnic spots and playground in Brabazon Park, the Hangar District is a new urban quarter that’s set to become one of the best addresses in Bristol.”

The email announced sales enquiries are now being accepted for the first new homes.

A three-bedroom home at the Hangar District will start from £436,250, with Help to Buy available on selected homes reserved before December 15.

The price for the apartments and two-bedroom houses, which will come at a lower cost, will be revealed when they launch in early 2021.

A public show home is expected to launch early next year, and the first new homes should be ready for people to move in by spring.

The brochure says Brabazon will become “Bristol’s best-connected new neighbourhood” and “the new playground for Bristol’s next generation”.

The development will be next to the new YTL Arena set to be built on another part of the former airfield, which is due to open in 2023 inside a former hangar.

Built in 1946 for the construction of the Brabazon airliner, the building later became the birthplace of Concorde.

There are plans for transport connections at the airfield including a new North Filton railway station, and a dedicated MetroBus.

The development will be split into seven districts: Brabazon West, West Lake District, the Hangar District, East Lake District, Eastern Quarter, Enterprise District and the Learning District.

It is boldly described in the new YTL marketing brochure as “the most exciting place to be in the South West”.

The pitch to prospective residents reads: “You’ll be able to wander around independent stores, artisan cafes and creative pop-ups, or watch artists take the stage at the supersonic new YTL Arena complex”.

Developers expect construction to take 20 years until the entire Brabazon neighbourhood is complete.
