Football Robins rocked as Weimann looks set to miss rest of the season

BRISTOL City have confirmed that Andi Weimann suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the weekend against Swansea City.

The incident in which it occurred was described as “innocuous” following the game by head coach Dean Holden but has now been diagnosed as an ACL tear.

The recovery time is on average eight to nine months, meaning Weimann is unlikely to play again this season.

The news is a hammer blow for the Robins, who were already without five other senior players for their trip to the Vitality Stadium to play Bournemouth last night.

Holden told the official club website: “This is really sad news and we are going to miss Andi. He is a leader on and off the pitch and we will support him fully during his rehab. Everyone at the club wishes him well.”

Weimann then posted an emotional message on his Instagram page to reveal how he is still reeling from the shock of the news himself.

He wrote: “I’m not going to lie ... I am still in shock about the news I received about my injury over the last couple of days and it hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“From pretty much not missing a game or even a training session over the last five years or so it’s going to be very strange and hard not to be out there running around like a headless chicken for such a long time. But I’m a positive person and I know I’ll be back as soon as physically possible.

“All I can do now is to support the boys and staff in any way I can to still make this a special season. Let’s go!”

The club also confirmed that Steven Sessegnon suffered a hamstring injury against the Swans and has returned to Fulham for assessment. No timescale has been put on his return to play, though the Bristol Post understands he is set to be on the sidelines for at least a couple of months.
