NEW Bristol Rovers signing Joe Day hopes he gets the chance to play in front of Gasheads before the season ends.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper joined Rovers on loan from Cardiff City on Monday for the remainder of the campaign, providing cover for Anssi Jaakkola who is sidelined for several weeks with an Achilles injury.

The former Newport County stopper has hundreds of senior games under his belt and adds valuable experience between the posts to Paul Tisdale’s squad.

Day’s playing opportunities have been limited since his move to the Cardiff City Stadium in 2019, and he is eager to return to action, ideally with fans watching sooner or later.

“Very happy to get it done so early and very excited to be here,” Day told the club’s website.

“There’s a few boys I know from my times at Newport and Peterborough, and I look forward to seeing them again.

“I’m looking forward to getting back and playing some minutes and enjoying football.

“It’s a strange old season and a condensed season, so hopefully I can play as much football as possible.

“It’s a great stadium and a great club, and hopefully before the end of the season we can have some fans back.”

Prior to his spells as second and third-choice goalkeeper at Cardiff, Day spent several years with Newport County, making more than 200 appearances in the EFL for the Exiles. He hopes his wealth of nous will give Tisdale’s young squad a boost.

“I had five-and-a-half seasons at Newport as first-choice ‘keeper, so I have lots of games under my belt and hopefully I can bring a bit of experience to the squad,” he added.
