Temple Gate Road closures as work begins to fix faults on redesign project

- John HOUSEMAN bristolpostnews@localworld.co.uk

ROADWORKS have begun in the Temple Meads area – rectifying faults following the road redesign which took 30 months and was eventually completed in December 2019.

Highways work began on Wednesday, as part of a “snagging” scheme for the project, Bristol City Council has confirmed.

Finishing touches will be made to the project to bring it up to standard and rectify defects at no extra cost to the council, a statement revealed.

There will be closures to a number of roads both during the day and overnight to accommodate the scheme, which is expected to be completed on Friday, May 28.

A statement from the council said: “Most of the works are scheduled overnight between 8pm and 6am to minimise disruption however, due to operational necessity, some works will take place during the day and diversions will be in place.

“The rectification works follow the completion of the Temple Gate scheme in December 2019.

“Similar to many highways schemes Eurovia, the project contractor, is returning to correct several minor defects in drainage, road surfacing and bus stop infrastructure to meet the standards of their contract at no cost to the council.

“Eurovia will also do weather dependent high friction surfacing works originally planned for the end of the main contract that had to be postponed because the scheme was completed in the winter months.

“The rectification works were originally planned for early in 2020 but have been delayed due to the Covid19 pandemic.”

Bristol City Council spent nearly three years on the original project including redesigning the road network and turning a roundabout into a straight road. The new layout opened at the end of 2019 but diversions for pedestrians and cyclists were in place until May 2020.

Under the original plans, the works were expected to take 12 to 18 months but faced a number of delays after a series of problems caused by unexpected discoveries under the road including unrecorded electricity cables and water pipes, and uncharted cellars under the roundabout and Victoria Street.

As previously reported, as well as delays to the scheme, the project ended up costing more than £17million – £6million more than when the initial planning began.
