HEALTH Notes

-

Almost three million people in the UK are thought to be living with osteoporosis.

“It occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both,” says Dr Ken Hansraj, spine surgeon at Nuvance Health.

“As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from minor bumps.”

If you are at risk, consider installing handrails and removing any trip hazards to prevent falls which can lead to bone injuries.

“Great bones are made by paying attention to calcium and vitamin D intake, as well as doing weightbearing exercise and strength training,” adds Dr Hansraj.

“Ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels. Worldwide, more than half of the population is vitamin D deficient.” Having enough calcium in your diet is also crucial.

If you are lactose intolerant or follow a vegan diet, consider taking a suitable supplement.
