Former Robins midfielder Walsh looks poised for Swansea move
LIAM Walsh looks set to move along the M4 and sign for Championship rivals Swansea City after the South Wales club opened talks with the former Bristol City midfielder.
As reported by the Bristol Post last month, Walsh was set to become a primary transfer target for Swansea if they were unable to secure promotion into the Premier League.
Football Insider have reported the Swans have opened negotiations with Walsh’s representatives but face competition from other Championship clubs. The Bristol Post understands the salary offer being presented by Swansea is unlikely to be bettered.
Walsh was among the group of 11 players released by Bristol City following the conclusion to the 202021 campaign as Nigel Pearson looks to start afresh in BS3.
The 23-year-old had been a target for Steve Cooper in the summer of 2020 after an outstanding season on loan with Coventry City but the Robins activated a 12-month clause in his contract ending any chance of a move materialising.
Coventry have maintained their desire to sign him permanently, both last summer and now, but have been unable to compete financially.
Walsh endured an injuryplagued campaign for City in 202021, sustaining a thigh injury in
which the former Everton academy player was among those unhappy with their rehabilitation under the previous medical staff at the club.
He briefly returned in March to make three appearances but suffered a hamstring injury ruling him out for the season and, as a result, he was not included on the Robins retained list for next season.
Should he complete a move to
the Liberty Stadium, Walsh will join another former City midfielder in Korey Smith who was a regular under Cooper last season as the finished fourth in the Championship.
Smith also left Ashton Gate on a free transfer following an injuryplagued final two years to what was a glorious spell in the West Country.
