The Voice UK vocal coach Jennifer John tells us singing is meant to be enjoyed so everyone should give it a try

- DAISY FOX

COMPOSER, singer/songwriter, creative director and music mentor Jennifer John has enjoyed a rich and varied career.

A vocal coach on TV shows The Voice UK and The Voice Kids, she is passionate about encouraging young singers to think of themselves as artists, building confidence and selfexpression. Here Jennifer tells us about her experience as a singer.

Did you always want to be a singer?

I started being involved in music from a very young age, so it is definitely in my mind, body and energy. I love singing because I love to tell stories and singing lets me do that.

How do you feel when you’re singing?

I feel lots of different things when I am singing. It depends on the subject matter. Physically though, because singing requires lots of breath control, I always feel more energised and happier. It’s the same as exercising makes you feel.

Do you ever get nervous about performing?

Always. There is always a shift in my adrenalin. My heartbeat gets a little quicker and I become more self conscious but it’s all good.

Most memorable moment?

Singing on stage with Elton John and George Michael. I was invited to be a guest performer for The Equality Shows which took place every year at The Royal Albert Hall in London. The year I did it was amazing and I had a fantastic time. My parents and my daughter were there so I was very proud indeed.

What was it like working on ITV series The Voice Kids?

Really good. I love listening to people who love singing. It’s great when young people love the sound of their own voices. It fills me with joy and to be able to help those people do what they love makes my job worthwhile.

Can anyone be a singer?

Yes of course. Singing is meant to be enjoyed so everyone has the right to do it and enjoy it. It’s important if you want to be a professional singer to practice as much as possible so you get better and better at it.
