ONE LAST THING

-

New powers are in the offing which mean councils can fine motorists for “moving traffic offences”. By the end of the year, drivers performing banned U-turns or coming to rest in box junctions or speeding along cycle lanes without a care in the world can be slapped with a £70 bill.

Quite right, too. There’s little enough politeness these days – on or off the road. But there is one offence not included in the list which in my book trumps them all. And that’s those rude people behind a wheel who just don’t say thanks.

You know the sort. The Corsa driver who sails by without so much as a raise of the hand after you’ve allowed them out at a junction. Or the oncoming BMW who speeds past, eyes fixed straight ahead, while you’ve been obliged to tuck into a tiny space.

Not even a suggestion of inclined finger to acknowledge you’ve done them a favour.

Honestly, the older I get the more irritated I become by this lack of courtesy as I find myself bellowing “you’re welcome!” as their bumper disappears in my rear view mirror.

Seventy quid fines be damned. I’d clap them in stocks and tickle them with furry dice until they said sorry.
