Papers and puzzles keep Betty going strong at 100

-

BETTY Hakes, at 100 years old, is an inspiration to many and her tip for others is “just to keep going”.

The Fishponds resident, full name Lillian Betty Jones Hakes, has lived in the area for more than 70 years and her outlook on life has never wavered.

She said: “You’ve just got to keep going. And keep your mind busy.”

Mrs Hakes lost her husband of 72 years in 2015, but she still lives at home, cooks her own meals and keeps her home clean and tidy.

Despite being in pain with arthritis, she keeps going.

She said: “I’ve got my papers, my puzzles and my television. I like to do as much as I can by myself; it’s only my legs that sometimes stop me.”

Her daughter, Joan Lovel, said Betty had outlived her three other siblings. At the age of 14, she dropped out of the then Colston’s Girls’ School, where she had a scholarship, to take care of her family, including her sick mother.

In 1953, Mrs Hakes organised a street party for the coronation.

To celebrate her birthday on June 29, dozens of cards were made for her by children at Hanham Toddlers Pre-School.

Arranging the surprise were homecare workers from Alina Homecare. Branch manager Jade said: “It really is an honour to know and to care for someone like Betty. Her warmth and sense of humour is second to none and our care team really do enjoy every visit.”

Carer Michelle said: “Betty’s an inspiration. To be as independent as she is at 100 is just amazing. She’s such a joy to be around.”
