What a culture shock

-

DOES anyone remember Periton Mead open-air school in Minehead during the mid 1950s?

I was diagnosed with asthma and was sent there. I was taken from a small terraced house with no bathroom and an outside loo in Bristol to this very large house.

I was collected by coach from Tower Hill Clinic and taken to Minehead.

We slept in a large dormitory with 12 to 15 children in each. We had our meals in a huge dining room in this large mansion. What a culture shock for young nine-yearold!

The large gardens with many chickens in a pen gave me my one of my daily tasks which was to collect newly laid eggs.

Coming from a family of seven it was quite bewildering as we only saw our parents once a month, as having no transport, a coach was organised to bring parents to see us.
