Have a word... or three

Comedian John Bishop chats to celeb guests about the trio of words that means something to them, plus there’s drama and nature in this week’s podcasts

THREE LITTLE WORDS

JOHN BISHOP is a surprisingly good interviewer in this podcast that asks celebrity guests for the three little words that mean something important to them.

He is unexpectedly unassuming, allowing his subjects to speak freely, without constantly interrupting them with gags or ‘look at me’ moments, unlike many comediansturned-chat-showhosts.

John’s co-presenter Tony Pitts (Emmerdale, Peaky Blinders) is even more restrained – except for the odd interjection you mostly hear him laughing along in the background.

His star turn comes when he pops up to provide the definition, etymology and quote of the chosen words.

All this does mean the guests waffle on a bit, but they’ve led such interesting lives that it’s not like getting stuck next to the office bore at a leaving do.

WHERE TO START: Eddie Izzard chooses the words humanity, films and determination as she explains her inspirational outlook on life. Find it on all the usual podcast apps.

THE CALL OF THE VOID

There’s something lurking in the swamps of New Orleans – witnesses enigmatically describe it as a sound that you can’t hear before developing almost sudden blindness that leads to their minds deteriorating.

With his dad in hospital as the latest victim of this strange ailment, historian Topher (Michael Alan Herman) sets out with ex-classmate and psychic Etsy (Josie Eli Herman) to uncover the mystery and hopefully save everyone affected.

Is it a science experiment gone wrong, a supernatural being or a bit of both?

Now into its second series and a third promised in 2022, the addictive audio drama has hints of Stranger Things and True Blood as the characters realise they have to face their inner darkness to succeed.
