Learn to dig archaeology
Bring the past alive and learn about the area you live in, as experts take families on an exciting journey through time
THE UK’s biggest annual celebration of archaeology is taking place this month from July 17 to August 1, and organisers are encouraging families to take part in it together.
Run by the British Council for Archaeology, the theme of this year’s festival is “Exploring Local Places” – and that’s something we’ve all learned to do more of during the pandemic! They want enthusiasts of all ages to discover the archaeology that’s all around them by exploring their local area.
Festival Co-ordinator, Debbie Frearson, says: “Through nationwide digital and on-the-ground events, archaeological experts can help you discover how your local landscape has changed to become what it is today, as well as discover exciting stories about your local community.
“Archaeology is a great tool to help us understand the world around us – both above and below ground. It allows us to work out how people in the past used to live from the traces they left behind; and it gives us the skills and opportunities to tell the stories of places and people, helping us to understand and connect to the world and make it a better, more inclusive place.”
And she adds: “It’s a great opportunity for families.
“There are hundreds of in-person and virtual events, as well as downloadable resources, allowing families to get involved however, whenever, and from wherever it’s best for them.
“It’s for all ages, and we try to ensure that every family member can participate in ways that are enjoyable and interesting to them. We want as many people go get involved as possible.”
