A pirate's life for me
Actress Gemma Hunt chats to us about the joys of playing buccaneer host Gem in CBeebies game show Swashbuckle
How do you feel when you are performing?
It is exciting and scary in equal measure! I love the thrill of performing live, as you can’t go back and do it again, and I love that you get an instant reaction from people that are watching.
I do get nervous, especially when I have friends or family watching. But I try to manage my nerves and not let them get the better of me. I believe that having nerves just means that you care about the job you’re doing.
Do you ever forget your lines?
Yes! But I have ways of getting around it, which is usually to giggle as I frantically search my brain for the right words to say!
Have you tried the games on Swashbuckle?
I used to love climbing and jumping, but now I feel like I’m too big! It’s often a bit of a squeeze for me to climb around a soft play but I do enjoy going to a trampoline park.
There are only a couple of games that I’ve tried on Swashbuckle, as they’re not really built for adults, but I have played Pirate Cannons and Stepping Stones.
Are pirates Cook and Line naughty in real life?
They are VERY funny in real life, like they are on Swashbuckle. I am often told by the producers that they can hear me giggling when I am in the makeup room with the boys but they’re not naughty, they are really kind and lovely friends.
Do you see other TV stars in the studios where you work?
Yes. The CBeebies presenters are a big family, so we try to see each other when we can and it’s always good to bump into other performers.
If you could be a character in any film or TV programme what would it be?
I’d love to be a fairy godmother, someone who can bring happiness and joy and help dreams to come true.
Someone who can encourage people when things are tough and inspire them to be the best they can be.
If you weren't on TV, which job would you like to do?
I always wanted to be a primary school teacher, I suppose I’ve always enjoyed working with that age group. I know it’s hard work being a teacher but I love the fact that they have such a positive influence over children’s lives and education. I would see it as a real honour.
