War of the Worlds Residents warned of ‘imitation guns’
RESIDENTS have been warned to expect imitation firearms and traffic control when War of the Worlds scenes are filmed in Redcliffe.
The shoot for series three of the Disney+ sci-fi hit will include three days of filming in Redcliffe.
War of the Worlds, based on HG Wells’ classic novel, stars Golden Globe winners Gabriel Byrne, right, and Daisy Edgar-Jones, below. The second series, shot largely in Bristol, was released in July and the third will air next year.
In a letter posted through Redcliffe doors on Wednesday, Newport-based production company Urban Myth Films revealed some details of this month’s shoot.
The team’s assistant location manager said one of the locations would be “#1 Redcliff on Redcliffe Road”, which appears to refer to
One Redcliffe Street, the 64m-high office block and former home of paper manufacturers E S & A Robinson.
The letter reads: “Film dates on site are currently scheduled for: Sunday, September 5 (filming 7am to 7.30pm); Saturday, September 11 (filming 11am to 10.30pm); Sunday, September 12 (filming 11am to 10.30pm).
“On film days we plan to park our technical vehicles in suspended parking bays along Redcliff and St Thomas Streets and will also be making use of a cherry picker / genie boom which will be positioned on Redcliff Street outside of Caffe Oro.
“We will be filming in and around #1 Redcliffe Building as well as on Redcliffe Street itself towards the latter part of the above mentioned days. “There will be a traffic management team present on site to assist with traffic control for the road scenes and will operate a ‘STOP’ and ‘GO’ style management system – only pausing traffic intermittently for a few minutes at a time and only when we are filming on the road. “Please note that there will be imitation firearms on site as well as actors dressed in police and military style uniforms with vehicles dressed to look like police cars.”
The manager writes that “necessary permits and permissions” have been obtained, adding: “We will endeavour to keep noise levels down at night when vacating the premises around 10.30pm and apologise in advance for any temporary inconvenience the above may cause.”
Other scenes for series three, one of which involved a black car reversing into a police car, were filmed last month on Broad Street.
The second series, available on Disney+ streaming service Star, was partially filmed in Bristol between August and October last year. Locations included the then-Bristol Post office block at Temple Way, the Old Soap Factory on Unity Street, Charleton House on Great Ann Street, Redcross Street in Old Market, St Matthias House in St Pauls and Glass Wharf on Avon Street.
