Town green status for ex-golf course

-

A FORMER golf course in Portishead has been given town green status – to protect it from development for future generations.

North Somerset Council has given the former Approach Golf Course at Nore Road the protected status, which can be given where it can be proved land has been used for recreation and ‘lawful sports and pastimes’ for 20 years.

The move comes after North Somerset Council took back control of the land, which it owns, in April.

It had been let to Adrian Stiff and operated as a golf course, but had been mothballed since April 2018.

Mr Stiff took over the golf course in 2014 on a 25-year lease. But when two footpaths which cross the course were made official rights of way after a campaign by residents Mr Stiff said it was no longer viable.

North Somerset Council worked with Portishead Town Council and residents to secure the protection.

North Somerset Council executive member for asset management Councillor Ash Cartman said: “Open green spaces are an important part of a healthy community.

“Reclaiming and saving this space is a real success story and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
