LIFE SAVERS

We find out what it’s like to crew an RNLI lifeboat

- DAISY FOX Family Time Correspondent

RNLI Lifeboat crews and lifeguards play a vital role in keeping us safe at sea. On average, they saved more than a person a day from drowning in British and Irish waters in 2021.

Lifeboat crew member Dave Turnbull joined the RNLI in Dec 1992 as a volunteer. He is now Swanage lifeboat’s full-time coxswain and mechanic. He answered our questions about his role.

Why did you become a lifeboat crew member?

My father was already involved with the lifeboat and I joined when they needed more crew to go on the new inshore lifeboat the station was getting.

How do you know if someone is in trouble?

When the UK Coastguard activates our pagers we know that someone needs our help. One of our team will then contact the Coastguard to find out who is in trouble and what help they need.

What happens after you rescue someone?

Not all of the people we rescue need to go to hospital but those that are ill, injured or have been in the water for a long time might have to. We would then ask to meet an ambulance or a helicopter to take them to hospital.

Is it exciting going fast on the lifeboat?

Our lifeboat has a top speed of 25 knots which is about 30 mph. It can be exciting but we have to concentrate on doing our jobs and make sure we get to where we need to be safely.

What other vehicles do you use?

We have all sorts of vehicles to launch and recover our lifeboats. They range from Land Rovers to special tractors that are designed to go in the sea. We also have a few hovercraft for doing rescues in muddy areas.

Have you rescued animals?

Yes we have. We’ve rescued dogs and deer over the years. Sometimes owners go in after their pets and get in trouble so it’s often safer for us to carry out the rescue.

What skills do you need to join the crew?

You need to be able to work as part of a team, you need to be dedicated and willing to put the time in to your training.

Do you ever get scared on a rescue?

Not really, we have the best equipment and training to keep us safe, but there are some situations where you might be a bit apprehensive until you know that you’ve got the job done.

What do you like best about your job?

Helping people that are in trouble. All lifeboat crew members like to help people and it’s very rewarding.

■ If you are heading to the coast and see someone in trouble or find yourself in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. To support RNLI lifesavers like Dave please visit RNLI.org/GoDonate
