Mayall’s earlier success

A SHORT feature on the 40th anniversary of sitcom The Young Ones says it was the first major television series for cowriters Rik Mayall, Lise Mayer and Ben Elton.

It could depend on how ‘major’ is defined, but Mayall had previously appeared as the character Kevin Turvey in BBC2 sketch series A Kick Up The Eighties in 1981. The programme had yielded a Turvey spin-off film.

Also, as is often the case in the press, Lise Mayer’s name is misspelt.
