‘Vaccinations help me lead a normal life’

London-based business development director Bayan Mohajeri, 26, has multiple sclerosis, which makes him vulnerable to infection – so vaccines are vital for him

“During the pandemic I’d been isolating along with my mother, who is also immunocompromised. My neurologist put me forward for a new treatment called HSCT – it’s a week of intense chemo in an isolation room.

“They collect your stem cells, freeze them, then wipe out your immune system completely and give you the stem cells back to create a new immune system in you. It meant my immune system was pretty much that of a newborn.

“I then spent a month in a hospital room. When doctors entered they would be fully masked-up and my room was disinfected every day as I was so vulnerable.

“After 100 days I could start getting revaccinated – all my childhood jabs, the flu vaccine and my first Covid vaccine earlier

“That was a huge milestone

– I was now on a journey back to ‘normal life’.

“I had to have three Covid doses, then I was able to move back to London and do things – though I still stayed outdoors just to be safe. I had a booster in August, then another booster about three weeks ago. It’s vital to do everything I can to protect myself. The colder it gets, the more you’re stuck indoors with an increased risk – especially with immunity waning over time – so it was critical I got the latest Covid jab and the flu vaccine.

“It means I can do regular activities: I’m going on a work trip abroad, and if it wasn’t for the new booster, I’m not sure I would have been going.”
