Bristol Post

I thought other correspondents had clubbed together for ad!

-

ILOOKED forward, as usual, to collecting my daily copy of the Post from the local newsagent (remember them?), only to find that there was a double outer front page telling me to vote Labour in the local elections last week.

Naturally this was seen by thousands of people in our area. I am used to the occasional double-page outer advert in the Post and it clearly stating “Advertisement” at the top of the page. But a political party? Should a leading local newspaper be seen to promote so strikingly a political party?

I presume the Labour Party paid handsomely for this privilege (was it fully costed?), and the Post needs revenue but this doesn’t seem right to me. It jus appears to confirm my view that the Post leans to the left.

To make matters worse the advert included part of a Union Jack flag just to show how Keir has suddenly become all-patriotic after supporting Jeremy Corbyn for years, although part of a Union Jack was probably appropriate as it sums up his current approach – a bit of everything with no real conviction to get as many votes as possible.

I noticed in the small print at the bottom of the page – a real test for my eyesight – that the advert was promoted by David Evans of London, on behalf of the Labour Party so I’m guessing that this advert appeared all over the country.

This was another surprise as I thought that your correspondents Geoffrey Brooking and CN Westerman may have clubbed together to pay for it. I am getting over these shocks and I will probably use the double-page for potato and vegetable peelings so at least it will be of some use.
