A GLADIATORIAL STATUE
My wife and I enjoy our travels to the British Isles and have been there some thirty times over many years. In visiting the numerous places of interest, we noticed that in many locales we have seen the same statue that you have on page 71 of the July issue [Vol 89 Issue 3]. We wondered if you could be kind enough to provide the name of the sculpture and perhaps the sculptor for us? We have been faithful subscribers for many years and derive great enjoyment from your magazine
BRITAIN replies: This beautiful statue at Grimsthorpe Castle is attributed to John van Nost the Elder and is a copy of the Borghese Gladiator, a Roman marble sculpture.
