Local triumph

The tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, built to commemorate the Duke of Wellington following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, has successfully been restored. The monument, located just outside Wellington in Somerset – after which the Duke took his name – presented a major challenge, having become dilapidated due to its exposed position. The National Trust was able to raise the £3.1million required – thanks in large part to the passionate fundraising efforts of locals – and believes the monument is now possibly in better condition than when it was first completed.
