Restoratio­n has turned the site of Reading Abbey, once among England’s greatest medieval churches, into a popular urban attraction. The abbey remains poorly understood, however, and two secretive schemes underway fall short of what is needed – a proper research framework ahead of excavation conducted with full public engagement.
