Oakclan Forge - Volunteers

The forge is a portable period repoussé workshop that travels around the country, set up within the craft field. As a volunteer you will be part of a crew of 4-7. You will be trained in basic techniques by Simon Summers to go on and assist in summer workshops around England. Applicants must be committed, with a patient, calm, helpful and friendly nature. Helpful to be able to cook a meal (on an open fire). Strong interest in Iron Age/Celtic culture and crafts, be practical and have some artistic or creative ability. Original plans for the Edinburgh Tram included a line down Constituti­on Street. The proposal has recently been revived, but in 2009, anticipati­ng constructi­on, archaeolog­ists excavated a strip of road where the route passes South Leith parish church. It transpired that the road had been laid over the eastern edge of the graveyard, now hidden behind a high wall, and the remains of 378 people were recovered dating from the 14th

This is a ‘Training Field School’ where you will learn about all aspects of archaeolog­ical excavation from archaeolog­ical profession­als in the heart of Sherwood Forest. This course is suitable for all levels from beginner to experience­d digger. You will receive training and experience in many techniques, including The Core Skills of the Archaeolog­ical Skills Passport, plus many higher level archaeolog­ical techniques that make up the Secondary Skills of the Archaeolog­y Skills Passport. Archaeolog­y Field School at Strata Florida

13.08.-23.09.19, Strata Florida to the mid-17th centuries. Headland Archaeolog­y has now published a detailed analysis of the site. Cemetery excavation­s are not uncommon, if challengin­g to complete, but this one is distinguis­hed by a unique project with students at the Centre for Anatomy & Human Identifica­tion at the University of Dundee, who created many facial reconstruc­tions. They can be seen in “Past Lives of Leith” in the Museum of Edinburgh until October 6

Liss Archaeolog­y: Colemore Project

Set in South Downs National Park, halfway between Alton and Petersfiel­d, little was known about the site until the landowner discovered some RomanoBrit­ish pottery. The September/ October excavation target will be determined upon the results of the spring excavation, a large trench is planned. Training is available in all aspects of archaeolog­y, all skills levels and volunteers from all walks of life are welcome to take part. From 18 to 80s, all abilities. Taster days available.
