FIRST SIGHT
This lead alloy shield, only 5cm long and missing its horizontal pin, is a brooch that someone wore between AD1050 and 1175 – in other words, around the time of the Battle of Hastings (1066) and the later manufacture of the Bayeux Tapestry, where similar kite-shaped shields are depicted (inset). It was found near Benniworth, Lincolnshire. Photography Portable Antiquities Scheme
I don’t think any of us anticipated the level of enthusiasm that the Mithraeum has generated, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds, all coming for different reasons, but all inspired by this story of London. We’re definitely very passionate about that legacy.
