Skinny digging
Looking at the hypocaust discovered at Binchester (advert Jul/Aug 2019/167), reminded me of the time we discovered the hypocaust at Dewlish, Dorset, in 1969! Bill Putnam needed a thin student to crawl beneath the floor along the tunnels, and clear some of the debris. Guess who was chosen: I was the only one of his students going on to degree level (the rest wanted to get jobs as soon as possible) and I was very skinny. There was quite a considerable amount of the hypocaust intact, including the stoke hole.
