A head in Suffolk

-

Not only has the head of Claudius from the River Alde at Rendham now been turned into Nero (feature Nov/Dec 2021/181), but in your latest issue its find spot has been moved three miles downstream to Saxmundham.

Ten years or so ago I went to Rendham and was directed to the exact place where the boys found the bronze head in the river bank. They later painted it white and set it up on a garden gate. I attach a photograph of the village sign, which features the head. Incidentally, I am u unconvinced of the new Nero at attribution. Surely those ugly, p protruding ears are of Claudius? William Foot, Arundel

?? ?? Above: Nero’s head (or possibly that of Claudius) appears on the village sign at Rendham, Suffolk (though it should now be Saxmundham). See A head in Suffolk
