AMERSHAM Band came fourth in the First Section Finals of the National Brass Band Championship, having only been promoted to the First Section last year.

This is the band’s highest ever result and adds icing to the cake of celebrations of the 175th year since the band first formed in 1843.

Playing against 16 of the top First Section bands from across the country at the finals, in Cheltenham, the band drew the last performance slot and had a long wait before taking the stage at 9pm.

Nevertheless, the adjudicators were impressed with the performance, with the summary: “A solid and well-managed performance with good solo lines and band sound.”

Band chairman Fred Harrison said: “We are delighted with this result. It is a great achievement and a just reward for all the hard work that went into preparing the test piece.”
