MP takes part in election observation
CHESHAM and Amersham MP Dame Cheryl Gillan recently led a Council of Europe delegation to observe the conducting of the general election in Bosnia and Herzegovina this week – and has also presented a full report to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
Dame Cheryl was appointed by the Council of Europe as the chairperson and leader of the delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly there.
Its members are drawn from across Europe as the Council of Europe’s membership is not limited to countries which are members of the European Union.
Eighteen MPs from 10 countries and all five political party groupings attended.
Dame Cheryl said: “Voting was calm and electors made their choice freely among a large number of parties and candidates.
“The PACE delegation regrets that, once again, the elections were held in violation of the European Convention of Human Rights concerning discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and residency.
“The delegations also expressed its disappointment that the election campaign remained segmented along ethnic lines.”
Speaking after her return to the UK, Dame Cheryl said: “The work that is done by the Council of Europe, of which the UK was a founder member, demonstrates that this country will continue to have a significant voice in Europe.”
