House 19
By Jestico + Whiles
This RIBA award-winning dwelling situated within a conservation area in Buckinghamshire fuses traditional form and local materials to make a modern statement. The architects at Jestico + Whiles designed a carbon neutral, energy-efficient home that follows the local vernacular and planning guidelines through the use of dark stained cedar cladding, luminescent flint and zinc roofing.
House 19 benefits from sunbathed interiors thanks to its large expanses of south-facing glass. The tripleglazed windows used across the build have been carefully positioned to frame stunning views of Old Amersham and the surrounding Chiltern Hills.
The designers oriented the long axis of the build east-west to enable solar heat gain in winter. The cantilevered roof overhang protects the interiors from excess sunlight during the hotter months. A doublestorey area with high-level vents at the heart of the dwelling encourages night-time cooling in summer.
In addition to the solar electric panels, the home’s underfloor heating is powered by a ground source heat pump. Rainwater is harvested to supply toilets, laundry appliances and gardening needs.
