Build It

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER

-

Access If your plot has poor or narrow access, this could dictate the use of a system that works with small, easy-to-transport units – such as bricks and blocks, or a stick build timber frame – rather than large panels that arrive on a truck and are craned in.

Storage space on site This is essential for all projects, but you’ll require more of it for masonry builds, as the bricks, blocks and insulation will all need to be kept dry and secure.

Building season If the main construction phase is going to take place in wet, wintry weather, or you have a very exposed site, you may want to opt for a system that gets you to watertight stage as soon as possible – such as timber frame, SIPS or ICF.

Location and available trades In most circumstances, there’s nothing to stop you building with any method, anywhere; but you might find that there’s a shortage (or a glut) of trades in your area, whether it be for brickies, timber frame erectors or others.

Small homes If every millimetre counts in your build, you may want a system that delivers maximum energy efficiency for minimal wall thickness – a typical timber or SIPS wall is thinner than its masonry equivalent for the same level of thermal performance, for instance.
