House design & shell build: what you need to know
Some firms offer a range of standard plans, but most provide a completely bespoke architectural service. You’ll set a brief and budget and the designer will respond with something that best suits your household and requirements.
With specialist build methods, such as oak frame, it makes sense to use a designer who has expertise in working with the system, so going in-house is a great option.
You will need to commit to the company’s construction system; but having one party design and complete the shell means you’ll get excellent cohesion between the architectural plans, structural design and what is actually built on site.
Many package suppliers are able to take control of planning approval and Building Regulations on your behalf, as well as offering a project management service.
It’s up to you how many follow-on services you want the company to complete.
Some firms just provide the main house shell, while others can supply and install products such as roofing, bricklaying, plaster-boarding and second-fix items.
