Pad Studio was tasked with designing this contemporary home on a modest budget to replace a poorly constructed and inefficient house that sat in stark contrast to its green setting. Located on an elevated plot in the South Downs, the building is surrounded by quiet woodland terrain with spectacular views. Built to stand harmoniously with the landscape, Pad Studio incorporated natural materials, including shingles to reflect the local vernacular.
Inside, the double-height spaces are lined with Douglas fir, exaggerating the feeling of light and nature within the home. Large windows flood the interior with sunshine and allow the owners to gaze out onto the breathtaking landscape. This theme flows throughout the house, which features an open plan kitchen and living room, with glazed doors extending out onto the terrace.
Key to the clients’ brief was the creation of a secret place within the dwelling, to allow them to retreat from the stresses of modern life and appreciate the natural beauty around them. An intimate space has been realised on the first floor, by way of a secluded room away from the rest of the house; a perfect hideaway for them to relax and enjoy the stunning vistas in the vicinity.
