Greener homes to combat extreme weather nationwide
Passivhaus schemes look to be the way forward for many UK dwellings, thanks to their energy efficiency and cost saving benefits. Originally designed to combat freezing winters, houses created to this standard have proven themselves equally useful in keeping cool during summer heatwaves, which are increasingly common throughout the UK. Official statistics show that heating and cooling domestic properties accounts for more than 15% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, and these heavily insulated buildings have clear environmental and economical benefits for homeowners. New Passivhaus projects are placing more of a priority on energy efficiency, with some reducing consumption by up to 80%, while electricity is supplied by partners using 100% renewable sources.
