MULTI-FUNCTIONAL ZONES
In smaller homes, allocating a designated space for individual activities is often a luxury you don’t have. One way to make the most of the existing floorplan is to think about how a zone’s function can be adapted to suit different times of day. For example, your bed does not necessarily need to be closed off from living areas. Fold-up versions come in many shapes and sizes and can be hidden away until they’re needed – like Simon Baker’s guest mattress on page 42. When I’m designing a new house, a study that can easily convert into a guest room is one common solution. This can be positioned next to a downstairs cloakroom with a shower.
