Gatti House
This striking extension was designed to add a contemporary twist to an historic vicarage in rural Hampshire. Adam Knibb Architects created a space which is architecturally interesting, but still sympathetic to the heritage family home. The two-storey addition features wide spans of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, connecting inside and outside, and the interior is flooded with natural light.
Adam Knibb Architects consulted the planners early on and selected a combination of wood and metal finishes, to give the project the best chance of success. The result is a stylish contemporary structure – the upper level is clad in vertical timber fins, in contrast with the red brick dwelling, but doesn’t overshadow its original character.
The extension has introduced a new dining area, which benefits from stunning views through the patio doors, opening onto a paved area, and an open-plan link to the newly refurbished kitchen. The homeowners have chosen a neutral decorative palette, with colour-blocked walls to visually separate different zones. Upstairs, the extension adds a dressing room and ensuite for the existing master bedroom. The dark tiles and flooring bring a modern vibe and the feature freestanding bath is in prime position to take in the landscape through full-height glazing.
