Many councils guilty of thwarting your Right to Build
Following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, the National Custom and Self Build Association (NACSBA) found that only 45% of councils have met their legal duties to provide plots to interested parties on their self build registers under Right to
Build legislation. Included in this figure are local authorities that deliberately make it difficult for people to realise their bespoke home ambitions. Many councils are cleansing their registers or charging excessive fees, discouraging people from joining or remaining on these lists. While a total of 55,000 people signed up to build their own houses since 2016, NACSBA believes that around 8,000 individuals have been removed.
