This side and rear extension to a Victorian semi in London was created by Gruff Architects for a family of three. The homeowners had recently returned from Australia and wanted their home to reflect the insideoutside lifestyle they had enjoyed, as well as drawing on influences from their Malaysian heritage. The result is a striking statement roof pitch, alongside plenty of glazing and a combination of timber and brick cladding.
The addition houses a kitchen-diner and utility room for the family to enjoy a sociable space, with timber making up lots of the internal decor as well as the frames for the doors and windows. The grey brickwork and wooden fenestration contrast the white render of the original building, adding warmth and texture.
Gruff Architects designed the space to establish a strong connection between the garden and the dwelling, incorporating large sliding doors and a central courtyard enclosed in glazing, which allows natural light to flood into the depth of the interiors. The doors open to the paved patio, leading on to a pond and immaculately designed garden, encouraging the inside-outside summertime feel the homeowners were after.
