Acting like a set of giant pocket doors, the sliding wall that separates the children’s sitting room from the rest of the ground floor was not originally included in the design of the house – but it made perfect sense. “If the children want to be messy or loud, or we have guests eating in the dining area, it’s nice to be able to separate that zone”, says Caroline.

Fortunately, there was just enough space to fit the sliding structures, which butt up to the soil pipe box-out from the guest and master ensuites. Made from timber studwork and faced with plasterboard, the moveable partitions have been painted to match the rest of the decor. When closed they look like regular internal walls, but they slot away completely when the area is opened up.
