Tsubo House
This Victorian house in Hackney had fallen into a state of disrepair before the team at Fraher and Findlay transformed it into a wonderfully light and tranquil Japanese-inspired family home. The works included a loft, rear and side infill extension, alongside a full internal refurbishment.
The architects designed a Tsubo Niwa (or enclosed courtyard) within the centre of the living area. This serene outside space is visible from nearly every room in the house and serves to articulate the relationship between the existing structure and new architecture. The courtyard encourages the occupiers to interact with the natural world in every season and it also draws in natural daylight and encourages good ventilation.
The rear extension sits quietly at the back of the building. Its full height windows slide back smoothly behind the black cladding, creating a seamless connection between the outside and inside living zones. The green roof above the addition helps to further blend the living space with the garden.
By using raw plaster throughout the house, the team have managed to create a sense of softness, celebrating the property’s imperfections and bringing out the best in the gentle, organic Japanese design.
