Low-maintenance materials...

Living next to the beach gives the Newmans a fantastic lifestyle, but it does have its downsides – particularly in terms of upkeep. e couple wanted to use pale external materials with a seaside feel, so plumped for white brick and Siberian larch. “We chose this combination as they have the longevity needed for the extreme environment of the coastal location, plus they complement the large windows and doors”, says Martin. “They both lend themselves well to the contemporary beach-house look that we wanted to achieve”. Another issue is the amount of sand that gets tramped around the house. “The sand dunes are right outside our front door, so carpets would not have been a sensible choice”, says Martin. “We went with a stone floor throughout the downstairs as we needed something robust that could be easily cleaned. It also works well with the underfloor heating system”.
