Lakeside retreat
This compact cabin is situated in the Kent Downs area of outstanding natural beauty, and is only accessible by a dirt path – so no vehicles allowed. An exposed timber frame complements the property’s woodland setting and swathes of glazing offer stunning views across the lake.
The deck of the cabin is cantilevered over the water, which is reached through the sliding glass doors that span two walls of the property. The building’s expansive glazing is combined with English oak cladding. The designers specified a combination of thin, narrowplaned timber and rough-sawn textured cladding to add a rustic touch. The pitched roof is finished in an untreated patinated bronze, which will tarnish and weather over time, changing with the landscape.
RX Architects worked hard to maximise a small footprint, incorporating an open-plan kitchen-livingdiner and steps and a ladder leading up to a mezzanine level. The full-height ceiling and exposed beams add to the feeling of a bright and open home. The interiors benefit from a natural wooden scheme throughout, which helps bounce light around the space. The timber wall cladding combined with sliding doors enhances the coveted inside-outside connection, which is exactly what the owners were after for their tranquil retreat.
