Cedar cladding...

-

The house is clad in sustainable cedar, which will gradually fade in colour over the years. Originally Sue and Antony wanted predominantly cedar shingle tiles to cover the walls of the new house, but these proved to be more expensive than the cladding planks. The amount of wood involved is the same but more work is needed to make each shingle tile and they are more labour intensive to fit, as they are smaller and require more battens. So the couple decided to do larger areas in plank cladding and smaller areas of shingle tiles to break up the outside and to add interest. They also opted for a rough finish on the cladding which they preferred aesthetically as it was in keeping with their ideas of wanting a simple unfussy design, but with the added benefit that they were cheaper than a smoother finish.
