This stunning new build detached dwelling in leafy West London was designed by Surman Weston. The owner wanted a state-of-the-art building with a strong industrial vibe, so the architects carefully considered the suburban locale. The resulting modern structure combines the two, borrowing traditional elements from the vernacular.
A strong A-frame form epitomises Tudor design but with a contemporary twist thanks to its steel skeleton. Industrial-style glazing allows the homeowner to enjoy vistas over their large garden, which was a priority in the brief. These bring an extra level of modernity with a nod to heritage leaded windows, but applied on a much larger scale. On the lower level, exposed floor decks overhead are made from steel, designed to be an avant-garde alternative to Tudor exposed beams. The modern white exterior is a nod to established villas and civic buildings in the area, which date back to the 1930s.
Vast swathes of glazing bring plenty of light into the home and the rear living zones benefit from raised ceilings for a greater impression of space. A classic, neutral interior scheme with warm timber floors softens the cold material choices of this contemporary abode, such as the steel roof and concrete soffit. Upstairs, the ceiling reaches 5m in height for an even more open feel. The master bedroom leads out onto an enclosed balcony, where the homeowner has views of the sky and trees.
