PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Sleek addition

- by Proctor & Shaw

This single storey rear extension ties together the heritage appeal of the original house with a more contemporary ambience. Clad in a dark brick blend, the material enhances the main house’s London stock masonry. Wide glazed expanses bring plenty of natural light into the living/kitchen/dining space and a huge rooflight pours sunshine in from above. The roof is cantilevered over the glass sliding doors, with the overhang detailed in a single, oversized, vertical brick-and-a-half lintel. This creates a contrast between a strong, heavy roof and the ultra-thin sightlines in the patio doors.

In order to give the homeowners a suitable garden while retaining their privacy, the architects designed the extension to sit as low as possible in the ground. It opens onto a semi-submerged courtyard, with steps leading up to the garden. This is tiled to match the kitchen, blurring the lines between interior and exterior. The garden walls are also in dark brick, which helps to tie all the elements together.

Inside, the central kitchen acts as the heart of the home, surrounded by social areas, including a dining space and a cosy lounge with contemporary stove. The layout is cleverly zoned by the internal structure, while yielding garden views from each area.
