SHOCKING MOMENT VAN NEARLY CRASHED OFF BRIDGE
VEHICLE ENDS UP ON RAILINGS
A VAN driver had a miraculous escape when a crash saw him land on railings over a bridge above the A38 in Burton – coming inches from falling onto the dual carriageway below.
Extraordinary footage showing the white van grind its way along the bridge railings was shot by a driving instructor while his student was taking her driving test.
It shows the van colliding with a car before scraping along the road and landing on top of the bridge on the railings separating it from the A38 below.
The shocking incident happened at the Branston Interchange near the Centrum 100 business park.
The footage was filmed by driving instructor Ian Stinchcombe, whose student was on her driving test at the time.
Mr Stinchcombe said: “The car was on a test with a female student driving and an examiner in the passenger seat.
“The girl saw it in the mirror and was in tears when they got back to the test centre.” Amazingly, the student still managed to pass her test despite the chaos behind her, our sister title The Mirror reported.
Staffordshire Police confirmed no one was arrested or charged following the incident.
A spokesman said: “We were called just after 2pm on Wednesday, July 11, to a report that a van had collided with the crash barrier on the A38 Branston Underpass.
“Fortunately no other vehicles were involved and the driver was not injured.
“Recovery of the vehicle was arranged, and a request was made for Highways to attend to repair the barrier.”
